Job Summary

This class involves work in maintaining the security, health and welfare of inmates confined to the Charlotte County direct supervision jail.  Academy training provides both intellectual tools and physical skills utilized by the corrections officer professional. Through academy and field training, trainees will learn the procedures walking a post within the jail, booking, and classifying prisoners, dispensing, food, prescription medications, and canteen items. Trainees will learn how to interpret and enforce all applicable State and local laws, ordinances and statutes, general orders, special instructions as well as policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Office. Trainees learn transporting prisoners to court, medical appointments, work details and other facilities; supervising work details and exercise sessions; and keeping records and logs on responsibilities prisoners as required. Florida statue requires a certificate of completion for certification as a law enforcement officer.


Essential Job Functions

Attend and complete the Corrections Academy.  Take and pass the Florida Department of Correctional State Examination for Corrections Officer. Complete CCSO FTO training for Corrections Officers.

  • Ability to successfully pass the FBAT test for Correctional Officers. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. 
  • Ability to learn to keep accurate and complete records and prepare clear and concise reports. 
  • Ability to learn to enforce the law impartially and with proper regard for the legal procedures and safeguards governing the work. 
  • Ability to learn to operate all equipment listed in the “Equipment Used” section.
  • Knowledge and ability to maintain their uniforms and equipment in a neat and serviceable condition and will, by their appearance, set an example of neatness and strict conformity with agency policy and general orders.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors and establish cohesive, effective relationships with peers (i.e., teamwork abilities), 
  • Ability and willingness to maintain dependable work habits such as reporting to work on time.
  • Ability to successfully pass the Physical Agility Test for certified officers. 
  • Ability to successfully pass the CCSO Oral Board for Corrections Officer. 
  • Ability to submit to a background investigation and psychology, polygraph, and drug tests. 
  • Ability to successfully pass all course work and field exercises of the Corrections Academy. 
  • Ability to successfully pass the Florida Department of Corrections examination for Corrections Officer employment. 
  • Ability to learn the policies, rules, regulations, and procedures governing Correctional operations within the Sheriff's Office. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public.
Education or Equivalent Experience Required
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Prefer two (2) year degree or currently enrolled. 
  • Possession of a valid Florida driver's license.
  • Completion of State approved training and certification as a Corrections Officer in compliance with the requirements of the State of Florida.   
  • Annually pass the physical abilities test of a certified officer through term of appointment. 
  • Prefer Valid Basic CPR and First Aid card

FDLE Physical Attributes

Gross Neuromuscular/Cardio-respiratory = Strength/Power-the ability to exert force, Muscular Endurance-the ability to perform repeated muscular contractions of up to a few minutes duration (this includes running short distances and other muscular challenges which invoke the anaerobic energy systems of the body). Mobility - locomotion, the ability to move about. Flexibility - the ability to move the major joints of the body through their range of motion. Agility - the ability to make well-coordinated movements. Aerobic Capacity - the ability to perform repeated muscular contractions over an extended period of time, exceeding several minutes and up to an hour or more. Respiratory Muscle Integrity - the ability to generate a forceful expiration. Fine Neuromuscular - Finger Dexterity - the ability to finely control the fingers. Reaction time - the ability to respond quickly to a stimulus. Eye-Hand Coordination - the ability to respond with the use of the hands to visual stimuli (reacting to a punch thrown, subduing a suspect with controlled and directed movements). Senses = Speech - the ability to communicate through speech. Hearing - the ability to hear sound. Vision - the ability to see. Smell - the ability to smell and distinguish odors. Environmental Tolerance - the ability to tolerate hot environments.

Physical Effort Required

Must be able to perform work pushing/pulling/grappling of persons or objects up to 150 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently (uniform vest, belt), and 10 pounds constantly. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of standing, walking, hearing, and kneeling, reaching, feeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, crawling, fingering, and performing repetitive motions. Must be physically fit to pass annual Physical Agility Test. Will spend some time driving office vehicles. Driving skill required. 

Working Conditions

Classroom and other training facilities. Noise level ranges from quiet to loud. Occasionally outdoors with exposure to extreme hot or cold temperature.
