Citizens' Police Academy FAQs

What is the purpose of conducting a Citizens' Police Academy?

To give the public information on how the Sheriff’s Office works and its policies and procedures, through a series of classes involving instruction by law enforcement officers.

Where did the concept originate?

The program originated in Orlando, Florida in 1984. Orlando was the first city in the United States to start a Citizens' Police Academy.

What was the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office incentive for starting a Citizens' Police Academy?

We feel the more information the public has about the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, less fears and misconceptions will exist. It will also provide opportunity for graduates to attend our Volunteer Services Unit academy.

When does the class meet?

Class times and dates vary. Check with coordinator.

Who attends the Citizens' Police Academy?

Students range from 18 years of age and above. We have architects, bankers, homemakers, students, retirees, teachers, neighborhood groups and professionals attending the classes.

How do you apply?

You must be at least 18 years old and live or work in the Charlotte County area. Complete the Citizens' Police Academy application which is available as an online form that can be filled out on your computer and submitted by email.

Is there a waiting list for the class?

That all depends on the amount of submitted applications in hand. Students are selected by date of submission. Wait times could be several months before an applicant is contacted.

How long is my application good for?

Applications are kept until the applicant has been contacted and notified of an opening in an upcoming class. However, after three failed contact attempts the application is void. The application is destroyed and a new application must be submitted.

What if I cannot attend an upcoming class when I am notified?

Contact will be documented and the applicant will be once again contacted for another class opening, at a later date.

When are classes?

The Citizens' Police Academy is offered numerous times a year at CCSO facilities throughout Charlotte County.
