Civilian Gun Safety Course
The Civilian Gun Safety Course is an 8 hour course designed to give the public an introduction to the Laws and rules governing safe gun handling techniques. The course consists of learning objectives based on Public Safety Awareness, Laws concerning Firearms and Weapons, handgun familiarization, Principles of Home Defense, and Shooting Techniques. The instruction is comprehensive and class participation is encouraged.
The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office holds several Civilian Handgun Safety Courses throughout the year. Courses are held on a Saturday from 8a-5p at the Sheriff's Office Training Building at 25500 Airport Road in Punta Gorda. Participants need to bring their own firearm along with 50 rounds of ammunition (no reloads). Completion of this course will meet one of the requirements for obtaining a concealed weapons permit in the State of Florida. Hearing and eye protection will be provided.
